What Should I Do When My Laptop Battery Doesn't Last As Long As It Used To?
28-Jan-2019
3 Tips to Make Your Laptop Battery Last Longer
You may see that the laptop battery tip can also be used for 15 to 24 hours. You may be able to use it for 10 hours, which is already very lucky. There is nothing wrong with these estimated data: the manufacturer chooses the least practical condition as the measurement basis.
All PC notebook manufacturers are advocating their overly optimistic numbers because they must do so. Everyone else does this. Manufacturers are not lying, those unrealistic battery life numbers come from a real benchmark, and they are expressed in awkward language.
If you look closely, you will see the words “maximum” before the battery life is estimated. The manufacturer does not promise a 16-hour battery life; it promises “up to 16 hours.” You will get 16 hours in an ideal, perfect environment - not in a normal environment.
Everything is related to video playback. The manufacturer plays the video on the laptop and calculates the time it takes for the laptop to run out of battery. They just let the video play until the laptop is turned off. They may disable the background feature and set the screen brightness below normal to save power.
Modern laptops (and smartphones) use hardware-accelerated video decoding. Laptops have special hardware in their graphics processing unit (GPU) that can effectively decode video with as little power as possible, reducing CPU usage. For example, when you play an MP4 video - even if it’s on a website or app - you can start and save power.
This is a great feature. It helps save battery life and keeps your laptop (or smartphone) cool while watching videos. However, manufacturers abuse it to use this number to boast of battery life. Everything else - whether you’re browsing a single website or just writing a document in Microsoft Word - will use more battery power than playing a video.
The remaining battery life of your laptop will vary greatly depending on your work. Manufacturers use the most unrealistic numbers they can find. No single laptop battery life estimate can be applied to everyone. However, battery life testing that simulates normal web browsing is more accurate and useful for most people. But manufacturers don’t think about your experience and feelings. In fact, they don’t care.
